Conquering The Fear of Flying

Fear of flying is a rather common condition that makes it difficult for people to enjoy traveling and going on vacations. For some people, the fear starts from the moment they reach the airport parking lot.

About ten percent of Americans have this condition, known as aerophobia, to such an extent that they have a hard time even boarding a plane. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to help alleviate or overcome your fear of flying.

Take the logical approach
If your fear of flying stems from never having flown before, try not to let your anxieties get the best of you. Every day, millions of people fly on planes around the world, yet very rarely do we hear of serious predicaments.

In fact, only about 1 in every 11 million flights are involved in a crash while, in comparison, you have about a 1 in 5000 chance of an accident each time you drive a car. The minute you reach the airport parking lot, you should realize that it was really much more dangerous driving to the airport than it will be taking the flight!

Dealing with airsickness
Some flyers, especially first time flyers, have fears about getting motion sickness while on the airplane. This is a rather common illness and it affects even seasoned travelers every now and then.

One way to handle motion sickness is to select a seat near the front of the plane. You can choose seats while booking or when checking in for your flight. Generally, it is better to reserve while booking, so that you have a better chance at the choice seats.

The front of the plane is subject to less turbulence and this will help prevent motion sickness. Additionally, you can order ginger ale, or bring some ginger cookies or candy with you on the flight. The ginger herb helps calm down the stomach and prevent nausea associated with motion sickness.

Aircraft noise
Aircraft are quite noisy and some people may start feeling anxious when they hear the roaring jet engines, as they pull into a discount airport parking lot. Bringing a media player or handheld entertainment device can help distract you from these sounds. As well, airlines generally provide headsets or disposable earphones to watch movies and shows on the flight.
With a little effort, you can conquer your fear of flying and learn to enjoy air travel.
